Meaning

The eternal fatherland names the destination to which Christ makes the way through suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension. It is not a national homeland or a proposal for political belonging. The surrounding explanation describes baptismal regeneration as a change from enemies and children of wrath to God's children and heirs. Following Christ toward this fatherland is expressly attributed to the Holy Spirit's power, not to human worthiness, merit, or independent will. The familial and journey senses work together: those newly related to God are also given a path into his glory.
