Meaning

Regeneration is the new spiritual birth and renewal of the fallen person. The main text explicitly locates it in holy baptism through water and Spirit, not merely in private moral self-improvement. Its ethical manifestation includes truthfulness, simplicity, patience, steadfastness, fear of God and harmlessness towards the neighbour. The new person is therefore both a relation to divine agency and a changed manner of conduct.

The material work supplies an image of cleansing and union, but the source does not make a chemical operation the efficient cause of salvation. Christ’s blood, the Holy Spirit and baptism govern the theological statements. The comparison remains a way of making the mystery intelligible.

Use in the book

Part One makes being regenerated and new part of the seeker’s fitness to recognize Nature. The ethically transformed knower can enter the affinity expressed as nature joining nature. This framing does not establish that laboratory success itself regenerates someone.

Part Three announces that the art mirrors the articles of faith, purification of original sin and the human passage through the vale of tears towards new life. Part Four develops that promise: humanity’s inherited corruption is figured as poison and dregs, while cleansing through water and Spirit unites believers with Christ as a body and edifice. Putting on Christ like a garment emphasizes received incorporation rather than an independent manufacture of a holy self.

The following unit explains that spiritual rebirth makes former children of wrath God’s friends, children and heirs. Christian following, humility and virtue are required, but their source is decisively qualified. The natural person is spiritually blind, deaf and dead; renewal and following come neither from worthiness, merit nor self-will, but solely from the Holy Spirit working through baptism. The sequence therefore cannot be used to say that good works purchase regeneration.

This sacramental specificity matters. Inward renewal is not opposed here to baptism as an unnecessary outward shell: the Spirit is described as powerful and active through its saving bath. The internal and ecclesial dimensions belong together in the passage.

The order of faith and works is stated explicitly in Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 47: good works do not precede faith but follow it as fruit follows a tree. Faith makes the works pleasing, not the reverse. Ethical transformation therefore remains consequential without becoming the cause by which regeneration is earned.

Translation

The supplied German body at Part I: entrance and preparation · unit 6 prints vnschedtlich in the neighbour-clause, which the English renders “harmless.” Modern note n34 instead discusses the form vnsetzlich. The body’s actual spelling must govern historical-form lookup; the differing note is not a second historical attestation or a silent correction. The English also keeps the exclusive causal statement in Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 36: renewal proceeds “in no way” from merit or one’s own will, but solely from the Spirit.
