Meaning

Return is the released life’s reunion with the universal life from which it came. The sphere supplies an image and argument of continuity: its roundness returns upon itself without a terminal break. Neither the individual’s return nor the cosmic roundness means that a mortal body survives indefinitely.

Use in the book

Book III first restricts life-extension to the strength of human natural composition. A compound bearing corruptible bodily mass cannot become immortal through the proposed medicine. Only after stripping away all body does life remain free and resemble the universal life of the great world. It rejoices in reunion as in its own nature, according to the rule that everything returns to its place of origin.

The same paragraph distinguishes death from annihilation of the spirit. Corrupting sulphur occupies the bodily dwelling, compelling the spirit to abandon it and return to the centre of the great sphere of life, while bodily masses return to earth. The earlier gloss of the fifth element’s centre as its own nature makes this a claim about the spirit’s condition and affinity, not only a spatial itinerary.

The next paragraph shifts emphasis to the world’s spherical form and earth as its central treasury. The ancient sages are said to infer eternity from unfailing roundness. Lines and circumference are described through indivisible points proceeding from a centre. These are the author’s geometrical-cosmological reasons, not a modern mathematical proof. Nature as household mother stores the riches of life centrally and distributes them for her children’s maintenance.

The key to that treasury is philosophy. Figures of ascent and underworld descent celebrate access to its wealth, but they do not cancel the distinction between the universal store and a finite individual receiver. The local senses of centre, own nature and terrestrial point remain connected without being interchangeable.

Translation

The new English’s “stripping away” and “reuniting” preserve the change from embodied extension to free life. The reading of points individus as indivisible points belongs to the historical argument. Keeping that register avoids presenting the sphere as either a modern physical model or a promise of bodily immortality.
