Meaning

Silenos is addressed as Bacchos's nurse at LIV.1; his identity makes foster-father a natural English rendering in this passage. The lexical form τιθηνός is not obligatorily masculine in every Greek use, however. Its reported appearance against Nature's τιθήνη at X.18 therefore does not compel a change from female nurse to male nurse.
