beast-shaped

Meaning

The adjective concerns form rather than temper. It describes the animal-like forms of the sea-nourished Tritons ridden by Nereids, the Satyrs accompanying Silenus, and the dark serpent-form assumed by Corybas. The adjective’s agreement must be followed locally: in XXIV.5 it qualifies μορφαῖς, not the Nereids as an undifferentiated group.
