Meaning
Nereus is asked to turn earthquakes away and send benefits to the initiates (XXIII.7). The noun names the dangerous shaking to be averted. The preceding account of disturbed foundations and confined winds supplies its local setting, rather than a general modern explanation of earthquakes.
