love-charm or attraction

Meaning

Aphrodite subjects the many kinds of beasts through φίλτρων at LV.14. The neighbouring ἐρωμανέων can agree with the charms as love-exciting, a reading explicitly supported by LSJ at this locus; the English instead attaches the excitement to the beasts. Both constructions preserve attraction as the means of subjection, but locate its quality differently.
