Having hidden dwellings

Meaning

The nymphs are κρυψίδομοι at LI.3, immediately before their description as Bakchos’s nurses and as earthly beings. Hidden homes therefore belong to their landscape and manner of dwelling, not to an identified human secret society. The apparatus attributes the printed word to Casaubon and reports κρυψίδρομοι, a different compound involving movement; the translation follows the dwelling-reading.
