English renderings
misty; murky

Meaning

Adonis dwells beneath misty Tartarus at LVI.10, and the Erinyes have a murky cave beside the Styx at LXIX.4. Here obscurity is the local force of the adjective. Unlike an ordinary aerial epithet, it accompanies enclosed or under-earth spaces, so “airy” alone would miss the atmosphere of the passages.
