English renderings
gloom-like; dark

Meaning

The adjective describes night’s veil, the region beneath which Plouton establishes his throne, and the night of Melinoe’s visitations. It can attach to a garment-image, a place, or a time. Its shared darkness need not mean that each passage refers to the underworld: the stars’ illuminated night-veil remains a celestial scene.
