English renderings
labour; exertion; ritual observance

Meaning

Herakles teems with mighty labours at XII.2, while VII.12 invites the stars to the learned labours of a sacred rite. Mise’s petition likewise speaks of good things accomplished amid labours at XLII.11. The ritual passages need not describe athletic contests. The dative ἀέθλοις alone cannot settle masculine versus neuter gender, so its task sense and local construction remain important.
