Meaning

The appended Ares hymn asks that the soul’s deceptive impulse be bent under the understanding (LXXXVIII.13). The adjective qualifies the impulse, not the soul in every respect. Its target is a movement that misleads and therefore needs restraint, within a prayer that seeks discipline as well as martial strength.
