Meaning

ἀμύητος means uninitiated, and can describe lack of experience in a sphere expressed by a dependent noun. The initiation vocabulary is real, but the local object determines what experience is absent. It need not always identify someone excluded from a mystery celebration.

Use in the book

Artemis is addressed as a helper of birth-pangs and herself uninitiated into birth-pangs at XXXVI.4. The repetition of ὠδίνων makes the paradox exact: she assists in what she has not personally undergone. The first genitive belongs to her helping function, the second to the experience denied her.

Reading only “uninitiated” can suggest that the goddess lacks a religious rank. That interpretation overlooks the repeated childbirth noun and the hymn’s appeal to her as a helper in delivery. “Inexperienced in birth-pangs” brings out the sentence’s application while retaining the striking metaphor of initiation into an experience.

Places to read

  1. Hymn XXXVI · Line 4Artemis helps the birth-pangs into which she herself is uninitiated.

Translation

The aligned translation’s initiation-language should be read together with its repeated reference to birth-pangs. The word occurs once in the supplied primary verse, and that occurrence supplies no description of a human initiation grade. It belongs beside μύστης for lexical comparison, not as evidence that Artemis occupies the opposite position in the worshippers’ ritual hierarchy.
