Meaning

Persephone receives this honorific in three underworld contexts, as the figure approached or the source of another goddess’s honours. At XXXVIII.3 the same adjective praises the Kouretes as saviours of the cosmos. Its common contribution is exalted distinction, not one shared bodily appearance or divine function. At XLIV.6 and XLVI.6 the apparatus reports pronoun phrases where the printed text has this noble epithet. Persephone’s name remains in each line independently of that change; she was not introduced simply by replacing the pronoun.
