Meaning

Operative Masonry concerns the work of building; speculative Masonry uses the language and tools of building for moral and intellectual inquiry.

Use in the book

The text makes an inward temple the true object of the speculative art. Physical structures supply forms through which the candidate considers character, truth, and spiritual life. This distinction is also used to argue that the fraternity’s significance exceeds the practical labor of historical builders. The vocabulary of construction becomes a sustained model of human development.

Reading the argument

The symbolic use of a craft does not itself settle the institution’s historical origin. Clymer’s account of ancient mysteries and an institutional history centered on medieval builders are different kinds of explanation and need independent assessment.

Related texts

The United Grand Lodge of England’s institutional history relates modern organized Freemasonry to medieval building traditions and the Grand Lodge formed in 1717. It supplies a comparison with Clymer’s more extensive sacred genealogy.10
