Meaning
These names mark positions or roles in the book's community of guarded teaching. A neophyte is a beginner; an initiate has been admitted; an adept is an advanced practitioner. Hierophant names an instructor or revealer of sacred matters.
Use in the book
I locates the roles in an Egyptian sacred genealogy and describes pupils carrying knowledge into other lands. Its account of the maxims requires instruction: the neophyte understands after an initiate explains and exemplifies them.
The authorial speakers call themselves initiates but remain students at Hermes' feet. III distinguishes their powers from those of higher masters. VIII places masters and adepts at lower levels of the spiritual plane, so even advanced status is relative.

In this edition
The several titles are retained rather than flattened into teacher. Hierophant is explained by its role here without assigning the book a specific ancient institutional office.
Reading the argument
The titles give the literary teaching a social structure. They do not identify a documented organization, certification system, or historical line of succession. Their exact ordering is also less rigid than the vocabulary might initially suggest.
