Meaning
Hyphēgeisthai is to lead the way or guide. Didaskein and manthanein distinguish teaching from the learner's acquisition of what is taught. Kata tropon means in the fitting or right way; it evaluates the manner of an activity without itself supplying a complete method. Dynamis here is the power or capacity of teacher and hearers, not the specialized mathematical sense of “power” later in the curriculum.
Use in the book
At the beginning of the theological account, the Athenian promises to speak if the god himself leads the way (980c). The condition returns when the best natures' education is at issue (989d). Such a nature is able to learn supremely well if someone teaches it, yet the teacher would not even teach unless a god led. These are linked conditions, not rival alternatives in which either divine inspiration or human instruction makes the other unnecessary.
The next restriction is severe: if the teaching is not carried out in the right way, it is better not to learn. The passage therefore refuses to treat the mere transmission of impressive material as beneficial. Theology and mathematics can fail in their educational purpose when wrongly handled. The text does not enumerate every possible pedagogical error at this point. The subsequent insistence on preparation, correct questioning, and synoptic understanding fills out what “the right way” demands.
The Athenian nevertheless accepts his own obligation to speak, and the best nature's obligation to learn. He proposes to explain what the studies are, of what sort, and how they should be learned, within the capacity of himself as speaker and of those able to hear (989d–990a). Human limitation remains inside the positive undertaking. The claim of guidance does not dispense with argument, nor does the qualification about capacity mean that nothing can be said.
Near the culmination, a properly received study brings great benefit; otherwise it is better always to call on a god (991d). At 992a a similarly framed alternative is to call on fortune when the subjects are handled otherwise than through their natural bond. These appeals should not be turned into a procedural shortcut that licenses neglecting instruction. Their contrast is with the reliably specified educational route: right preparation and right comprehension are what the account itself undertakes to provide.
Divine teaching also has a less exceptional sense elsewhere: the celestial cycles teach humanity number by repeatedly displaying countable differences. The special guidance of the advanced course continues that larger pedagogy, while adding a qualified human teacher and a rare qualified learner.

Translation in this edition
“Leads the way” keeps the recurrence of hyphēgeisthai at 980c and 989d. “In the right way” gives kata tropon its normative force while leaving the reader to obtain the method from the curriculum and its synthesis. The English distinguishes “preferable” for kreitton at 989d from “better” for ameinon at 991d.
Capable hearing — εἰσακούειν (eisakouein)
εἰσακούειν (eisakouein)
Capable hearing. The account proceeds within the powers of those able to listen, making the hearer's capacity part of successful instruction. Attested: εἰσακοῦσαι (990a). Divine guidance and the conditions of teaching.
Divine guidance of teaching — ὑφηγεῖσθαι (hyphēgeisthai)
ὑφηγεῖσθαι (hyphēgeisthai)
Divine guidance of teaching. Even a capable human teacher would not teach without a god leading the way. This condition connects the prayerful opening with the education supported by the theological inquiry. Attested: ὑφηγοῖτο (989d). Divine guidance and the conditions of teaching; Prayer hymn and the new beginning.
Capacity of instruction — δύναμις (dynamis)
δύναμις (dynamis)
Capacity of instruction. The speaker's and hearers' available powers set the human scope within which the account of reverence can be taught. Attested: δύναμιν (989e). Divine guidance and the conditions of teaching.
Conditional instruction — διδάσκειν (didaskein)
διδάσκειν (didaskein)
Conditional instruction. The best nature needs a teacher, and teaching done wrongly may be worse than not learning. Attested: διδάσκοι (989d). Divine guidance and the conditions of teaching.
Right conduct of study — τρόπος (tropos)
τρόπος (tropos)
Right conduct of study. In the phrase kata tropon, it names the manner required for beneficial instruction and unified learning, supplied by the surrounding curriculum. Attested: τρόπον (989d). Divine guidance and the conditions of teaching.
Better not to learn if teaching is wrong (contextual phrase)
κατὰ τρόπον δὲ μὴ δρῷ τὸ τοιοῦτον, κρεῖττον μὴ μανθάνειν (989d)
Wrongly conducted instruction can make abstaining from learning preferable. The phrase prevents technical subject matter from being treated as beneficial irrespective of method, moral formation, preparation, or the learner's understanding. Divine guidance and the conditions of teaching.
