Stobaeus, Volume I: About this edition
p. 2About this edition
This Greek and English edition of Stobaeus’s Anthology, Volume One, follows Curt Wachsmuth, Ioannis Stobaei Anthologii libri duo priores, volumen I (Berlin: Weidmann, 1884), containing Book I and its preliminary material. The Greek text and translation have undergone a full source, editorial, and layout review.
The edition contains the new introduction, dedication testimony, On Arithmetic, Book I through chapter 60, and the ancient contents as a bilingual appendix (source pp. 3–10). Chapters 2, 33-35, 37, 44, and 46 are lost; their restored headings are included. Chapter 2 also has a labeled proposed reconstruction. Chapter 42 is partly lost; its topic headings and missing-text notices are retained. The appendix outlines all four books; the full texts of Books II-IV are outside this volume.
Greek and English are paired passage by passage, with Greek first and English second. The PDF edition places them on facing pages; this reading edition preserves the same passage identifiers and footnote numbers. Explanatory notes accompany the English text. References to PDF pages identify the fixed pagination of the companion PDF edition.
Wachsmuth’s Latin introduction and full textual apparatus are outside the chosen translation scope. His apparatus is nevertheless consulted where a reading, supplement, attribution, or gap affects the English. The notes distinguish such textual evidence from explanation supplied for this edition.
The Greek in this edition has been transcribed and checked against the scanned pages. Modern spacing, apostrophes, and typographical presentation replace the original setting; dialectal forms and consequential editorial signs are retained. Latin descriptive author-headings are translated into Greek and English where noted. Difficult readings and interpretations remain explicitly qualified.
