Source p. 4held back in the corrections either by consideration of the book’s price or by that of the work’s length. A few years have been more than enough to show me the weak or faulty passages of this episode. Docile to criticism on this point, to the extent of being reproached for my excessive readiness, I have proved to those who attacked me that I am never wilfully in error, and that at all times and on all subjects I am ready to yield to lights superior to my own. Atala has been reprinted eleven times: five times separately, and six times in the Génie du Christianisme; if these eleven editions were compared, one would hardly find two of them exactly alike.
The twelfth, which I publish today, has been revised with the greatest care. I consulted friends quick to censure me; I weighed every sentence, examined every word. The style, freed of the epithets that encumbered it, moves perhaps with more naturalness and simplicity. I have put more order and sequence into some ideas; I have removed even the slightest incorrectness of language. M. de la Harpe used to say to me about Atala: ‘If you will shut yourself up with me for only a few hours, that time will be enough for us to efface the blemishes that make your censors cry out so loudly.’ I have spent four years revising this episode, but it is now as it must remain. It is the only Atala I shall acknowledge in future.
