Reading Route Through Operations and Practitioners
A Chymical Dictionary
p. 725Reading Route Through Operations and Practitioners
Read Spagiria, Spagirus and Ysopus as a group. They bring the art, its practitioner and the action of separating pure from impure into relation. Compare Sophistæ for an occupational name that can praise a master or condemn a deceiver.
Add Alchymia, Chymia and Cautela. Alchymia makes separation central, Chymia adds the making of essences, and Cautela describes skill acquired through habit. Together they connect the stated aims of the art with a practitioner’s capacity to conduct it.
Continue with Sublimatio, Volatile and Reverberatorium. Distinguish an operation, a general property and an instrument. Vulcanii and Vulcanus add the workers and fire itself. This route shows how a practical vocabulary distributes different roles across connected names.
Discussion questions. What makes an artist competent in the dictionary’s account? How does an operation differ from the property of a material? Which details identify an instrument’s function? Where would a historical recipe need more information than these definitions supply?
