At a Glance

The word. A name with two ash- or lime-associated identifications.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 4; facsimile PDF page 332.

Historical Definition

Annora is the ashes of eggs, or quicklime.

Meaning

The dictionary presents alternatives rather than one exclusive substance. A passage may specify eggs as its source, or may use the name for quicklime. Keeping both possibilities visible is more useful than choosing a single modern equivalent from the headword. The reference to ash also points toward a material altered by burning. Where a recipe survives, its starting substance and preparation can distinguish the intended sense more reliably than the word alone.

Places to Read

Calx lignorum. A direct identification of a calx as ash from wood.

Cinificatum. A material reduced to ash by burning.
