At a Glance
The word. An unspecified kind of mushroom.
In the book. Calliette is more descriptive, identifying yellow mushrooms on juniper trees.
A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 22; facsimile PDF page 350.
Historical Definition
Fædula is a kind of mushroom.
Meaning
The compiler places the subject in a broad group but does not give the features that distinguish the kind. No shape, colour, habitat or use is stated. The definition therefore supports recognition of the general category without settling a more exact identification.
Use in the Book
Calliette is more descriptive, identifying yellow mushrooms on juniper trees. Those additional features belong to Calliette and cannot be transferred to Fædula. The comparison shows the difference between a broad kind-name and a more particular historical description.
Places to Read
Calliette. A fungal-looking growth identified by colour and host.
