Kald

Salts solvents and liquid preparations · A Chymical Dictionary

At a Glance

The word. A short alternative name for vinegar.

In the book. Acetum radicale concerns vinegar distilled from its own root and matrix; Aqua solvens is distilled vinegar.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 28; facsimile PDF page 356.

Historical Definition

Kald is vinegar.

Meaning

The compiler gives a familiar equivalent and no further qualification. Kald should therefore first be read as vinegar, rather than automatically as the special philosophical vinegar defined elsewhere. A particular passage can qualify the material, but that qualification is not part of this headword.

Use in the Book

Acetum radicale concerns vinegar distilled from its own root and matrix; Aqua solvens is distilled vinegar. These added descriptions should not be silently transferred into the plain equivalence Kald.

Places to Read

Acetum radicale. A dissolving water described through the root and matrix of vinegar.

Aqua solvens. A direct identification of a dissolving water as distilled vinegar.
