At a Glance

The word. Generation understood as a continuing succession through propagation.

In the book. Divertalium gives a different formulation, generation made by elements.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 19; facsimile PDF page 347.

Historical Definition

Dardo is successive generation by propagation.

Meaning

The definition concerns a sequence of generation rather than naming a single generated thing. “Successive” and “propagation” belong together: the process proceeds from one generation to another. No particular animal, plant or mineral is specified.

Use in the Book

Divertalium gives a different formulation, generation made by elements. The distinction is useful when an author contrasts ways of coming into being. The dictionary does not state that these two labels describe mutually exclusive processes, so their relationship must be judged in the passage being read.

Places to Read

Divertalium. Generation attributed to the elements.
