Meaning

Philosophical Sulphur is the complementary sulphureous principle in the twofold Mercury and a member of the triadic constitution. Its qualification marks a relation within Magnesia, rather than an unrestricted reference to ordinary sulphur or sulphur extracted from a finished metal.

Use in the book

At p. 54 twofold Mercury is explained as Mercury with the Philosophers' Sulphur. The same chain calls it ensouled Mercury and unctuous humidity, that is, sulphureous Mercury. Sulphur is therefore integral to the pair's living and generative description. The triad which follows names Salt, Mercury and Sulphur of Nature, Wisdom and the Wise within the one natural subject.

The marginal continuation at pp. 76–772 makes the possessive relation explicit: catholic duplex Mercury has its own sulphur, philosophical rather than common. At p. 112 hidden Mercury and Sulphur in Magnesia supply a possible meaning of references to philosophical metals. These passages locate the principle within the required universal ground.

The later metallic-sulphur debate imposes a limit. Extractable sulphur of silver or gold remains specified and is not the entire metallic seed. Sharing the word Sulphur does not erase differences in source and condition.
