Meaning

Warning is addressed both to fraudulent claimants and to people vulnerable to their deception. In the prologue, considering and taking to heart a warning requires more than hearing a proverb: it asks readers to examine how authoritative writings can be misused as a cover for fraud.

The practical part gives the artist another warning before any manual action. Having the matter in hand is not enough; its qualities and properties must first be understood. The English distinguishes reminder, admonition and faithful warning, preserving their intensifying force. These cautions are integral to the work’s account of responsible knowledge, not a generic editorial disclaimer added after its promises.
