Meaning

The vale of tears names the earthly course through which a person passes before rising to new life. The passage says that the art presents this process, together with the articles of Christian faith, as in a mirror. The valley is therefore a figure for afflicted temporal existence, not a geographical location. Its endpoint is renewal and salvation rather than the mere end of distress. The image also links the author's promised theological exposition to the material account without making every earthly suffering a literal chemical operation.
