The Via lists cobblers, furriers, tailors, bankrupt merchants and brewers as examples in its attack on ignorant alchemical and medical pretension. The accusation concerns people who fail at metallic transformation, then proclaim themselves great physicians without understanding serious illnesses. Their supposed substitution of poisons for remedies supplies the grave consequence. The English preserves both occupations and bankruptcy, but the polemic is not neutral evidence that members of these trades are inherently incapable of learning medicine or alchemy. Its local lesson is about competence, boastful claims and harmful practice, with accountability to God and secular authority invoked.
