Meaning

The Via's jugglery and foolery are accusatory names for practices it rejects as sophistical. Way of Truth · unit 10 opposes elaborate named operations to plain natural coction. Way of Truth · unit 19 calls the addressee's cherished regimen foolery for improving metals, yet allows that it can sometimes help barbers, bathkeepers and physicians. Way of Truth · unit 25 turns from ineffective alchemy to dangerous medical pretension, attacking boastful chatter and ignorance that substitutes poisons for remedies. The English preserves these different stakes. A practice's rejection for transmutation is not automatically a denial of every medical use, while rhetorical confidence is explicitly no substitute for medical understanding.
