Meaning

The shadow is the dark, thick-looking condition that obscures the initially rough matter. The main treatise connects removing it with access to a hidden heart and inward soul, contrasting the obscured body with the clear and shining water described in the same unit. English “overshadows” follows obumbrirt and preserves the image of concealment rather than treating shadow as a separately weighed substance. Its function is both visual and interpretive: outward appearance does not exhaust what the matter contains. The later theological veil comparison draws on that relation, but the material passage itself should not be silently turned into a statement about sin. This initial covering is also distinct from the later black stage in Part II: matter and the work · unit 20, which the work treats as a favourable sign in its own sequence.
