Meaning

The seven liberal arts are named as discoveries the philosophers claimed to have made through the hidden art. The same sentence links their possession of it with livelihood sufficient to support study. The phrase therefore expands the art’s alleged intellectual benefit beyond making metals, but the passage does not enumerate the seven arts or explain their individual derivation. The English reading text retains the collective title. The modern note n73 supplies the conventional list: grammar, rhetoric, dialectic, arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. That list is explanatory apparatus, not an enumeration newly found in the historical German. The claim belongs to the narrator’s report of philosophical acknowledgment; it should not be converted into an independently established history of educational disciplines.
