Meaning

Response is the genre and title of two distinct texts printed in the 1661 layer, not a section-title belonging to the anonymous 1619 Hydrolith. The First Response’s heading names F. R. C. and its body expressly addresses “you both,” so its recipients are two people. The Second Response has its own title and the supplied edition’s uncertain transcription B[r?]. of R. C. Note n236 suggests that the raised character may abbreviate Bruder, but does not regard it as securely legible. The bracketed question is the edition’s uncertainty marker, not a resolved personal designation; the aligned English preserves it. These headings establish textual separation and addressed communication; they do not prove a common author, a date of composition identical to printing, or a recoverable identity behind the second text’s first person.
