Resistance and overcoming belong to the explicitly spiritual conflict in Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 43. Human beings cannot resist the hostile powers by their own strength; they follow Christ’s example and fight in faith with God’s Word. Extinguishing refers to the Devil’s fiery arrows being stopped by faith’s shield. The English “strike and overcome” preserves the force of the military verbs, but their targets remain spiritual enemies, not flesh-and-blood people. Removing that opening qualification would change the passage into something it expressly excludes. The verbs describe faithful defence under divine aid, not permission for bodily aggression.
