Meaning

Armour and weapons provide the main treatise with a coordinated vocabulary for spiritual resistance. The armoury, armour, breastplate, shield, sword and arrows are different parts of one scriptural image, not interchangeable names for the Stone. Their meanings are assigned within the passage: righteousness is the breastplate, faith the shield, and God’s Word the sword of the Spirit. Krebs der Gerechtigkeit means the breastplate of righteousness here, not the animal or a disease.

The action of arming also occurs in the First Response of 1661. There the travellers must acquire a courageous disposition while expressly needing no bodily sword or weapon. This is a related figurative use in a different work, not evidence that the response and the 1619 treatise have the same author.

Use in the book

Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 43 opens by denying that the conflict is against flesh and blood. The enemies are evil spiritual powers and their temptations. This qualification governs every subsequent military verb: striking and overcoming cannot be detached from it and made into an instruction to attack people. The speaker also denies that human beings can resist these powers by their own strength. Christ supplies the example of the champion, while Paul is represented as the Christian warrior commanding the faithful to enter the Holy Spirit’s armoury.

The equipment distributes the work of defence across truth, righteousness, readiness for the Gospel of peace, the Word and faith. Faith receives special emphasis because the Devil’s fiery arrows cannot penetrate its shield and wound the heart. The metaphor combines active resistance with dependence on protection that is not self-produced.

First Response · unit 9 uses a different narrative scene: two recipients are directed towards a hidden mountain in the darkest night under an unseen guide. Their courage must prevent fright and retreat. Prayer and the guide’s words, rather than bodily weapons, accompany their passage. The explicit exclusion of a physical sword is essential to the sense of “arm yourselves.”

Translation

The English “breastplate” makes the contextual meaning of Krebs intelligible without carrying over the misleading modern everyday associations of the German noun. “Arm yourselves with a heroic and courageous spirit” similarly explains waffnen through its stated object, the travellers’ disposition. The translation preserves the response’s negative clause, “You need no bodily sword or weapon.” Reading that clause alongside the main treatise’s “not against flesh and blood” keeps two distinct sources in productive comparison without converting either into literal military counsel.
