Meaning
Reduction here means bringing back, especially returning towards first matter or a more general condition from which generation can occur. It is not the modern chemical sense of a change defined by electron transfer, nor simply making an object smaller. The Latin-derived verb and noun are embedded in the Nature dialogue’s account of forms, elements and agency.
What is returned, who returns it and whether renewed generation remains possible are decisive questions. The phrase ‘reduced mass’ does not by itself mean a formless residue from any destructive treatment. Nature says that the species or forms brought back are contained in it.
Use in the book
Nature’s cosmological speech claims a God-given power to bring the four elements back into the fifth being, then called first matter. Generation arises through her art from that condition. The following unit denies that severe human effort can produce the same return without her. Proper influence, proportions and form are not within the autonomous practitioner’s command.
Her discussion of human and alchemical formation later describes an orderly mingling into a homogeneous subject returning to first matter. The practitioner arranges limited means, while Nature performs the formative work. These passages make reduction intelligible as an ordered natural relation, not a licence to confuse external handling with Nature’s own power.
The alchemist’s reply then asks what can be obtained from already formed gold. A return through determinate species requires corruption and a return to genus, but he denies that destroying the completed body lets a person manufacture gold again. Gold lacks the generative seed needed for the imagined return to its former form. This negative application limits a term that Nature had used positively. The dialogue is teaching a distinction between natural generative return and futile destruction, not simply contradicting itself every time it alternates approval and rejection of ‘reduction’.
