Meaning
Preparation applies both to a person fitting himself for the art and to material made ready for further work. The main treatise’s plan distinguishes these objects: its first part concerns the seeker’s preparation, the second the matter and governance of its preparation. The same English word therefore should not be reduced to either moral self-discipline or a laboratory operation alone.
The learned præparation and related verbs do not guarantee a preparation’s philosophical validity. The Way of Truth can acknowledge useful medicinal preparations while denying that they belong to true alchemy. Conversely, the Summary’s instruction not to wash is not a denial that all readiness or arrangement matters; it concerns the particular matter within its egg analogy.
Use in the book
Opening explanation · unit 10 makes preparation part of the work’s architecture. Part II: matter and the work · unit 10 then insists that the unusual matter must first be recognised correctly and given what is due to it. The artist is warned not to begin manual engagement without understanding the hidden spirit’s qualities in accordance with Nature. Readiness is thus inseparable from knowledge, not merely completion of preliminary handling.
Nature’s dialogue combines assistance with restraint. In Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 10 she permits the practitioner to choose and prepare the right matter and arrange the vessel and furnace, while retaining the formative work for herself. The alchemist’s reply interprets human assistance as philosophical knowledge and foresight, including removal of superfluity before the enclosed matter’s subsequent development. This is a stage-specific division of labour.
The Summary presents an apparently contrasting image of eggs set for hatching without washing. Its author explicitly maps that feature onto the Mercury he intends. The contrast must not be resolved by pretending that “not washing” means the same action as the other text’s removal of superfluity. Each is a local account of what should and should not be done to its subject.
The Way’s attack on Bodenstein gives preparation another evaluative setting. The narrator concedes that certain preparations made through ordinary fire were useful in medicine, then denies that they establish knowledge of natural alchemy. This distinction between local usefulness and membership in the true art is sharper than a blanket assertion that the preparations did nothing.

Translation
The English separates “fit and prepare themselves” from “preparation” of the matter in the opening plan. Nature’s beschicken becomes arranging things properly, not producing substantial form. The Way’s plural præparationes is retained as useful “preparations” within a hostile assessment of the practitioner’s alchemical claims. These actual wording differences keep moral readiness, material disposition and a conceded medicinal product distinct. The Summary’s “not wash” is preserved as a genuine source-specific qualification rather than silently reconciled with another author’s account.
