Meaning
Separation and reunion are opposed actions whose meaning depends on what is divided and what remains together. The main treatise can divide matter into three parts and reunite them; the dialogue can reject the human separation of the four elements; the same dialogue can allow removal of what is superfluous. These are not automatically contradictory commands about an identical object.
The family therefore preserves the grammatical objects of dividing, separating and joining. “Pure from rough,” “superfluity from matter,” “soul and spirit from body,” and “four elements from a naturally constituted subject” are distinct relations. Inseparability may describe a particular bond or the desired final condition, not a universal prohibition of every preparatory distinction.
Use in the book
Part II: matter and the work · unit 2 explains the Stone through its three natural parts and their renewed unity. Part II: matter and the work · unit 13 then distinguishes the inward heart and soul from the rough appearance; Part II: matter and the work · unit 14 summarises the preliminary work as separating pure from rough and making invisible visible again. The process riddle gives separation a temporal place: soul and spirit depart from the dissolved body but ultimately return, while their own mutual bond persists.
The alchemist’s reply to Nature allows preparation and removal of superfluity, then denies that human art can separate and restore the four elements in their proper proportions. He argues that a person who does not know the original quantity and quality cannot remake the subject after tearing its bond apart. His later analogy insists that generation need not destroy the father. This is not a retraction of every distinction within matter: it rejects destructive elemental disassembly as the means of producing the Stone.
The Summary gives another account of conjunction: Sun and Moon joined through true Mercury are contrasted with common gold, silver and mercury, which it calls dead. The Way of Truth uses separation negatively when liquor escapes from essence under corporeal fire, but describes a desired inseparable union of elemental fire and liquor. These companion voices employ shared relation words within differing accounts of growth, matter and heat.

Translation
English “separate” covers several historical verbs, which makes object tracking essential. The main treatise’s three parts cannot silently become the dialogue’s four elements, and removing superfluity cannot become destroying Nature’s bond. “Neither departs from the other” in the riddle refers locally to soul and spirit even while another separation from the body is described. The Way’s “inseparable” is the result of its own fire-and-liquor account, not proof that it endorses every operation named in the main treatise.
