Means marks mediated rather than self-originating attainment. In Part I: entrance and preparation · unit 3 God guides the upright seeker through his Spirit so that the person comes to a beginning “by the means provided.” The means are not individually named in that sentence. Part III: benefits and their rank · unit 9 applies the vocabulary to purification from original sin, without which human conduct and works are vain. English “through means” preserves the dependence rather than inventing a specific substance. The two contexts should remain distinct: a general promise of guidance into the art does not by itself identify the Church’s later specified means of absolution and Supper.
