Meaning

Finding, grasping and comprehending describe reception of the heavenly Stone, Christ. Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 6 places them after an explicit statement that the gift is freely given to rich and poor without their merit: failure to grasp it does not mean that access must be earned by superior achievement. Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 37 adds a different limit, the newborn believer’s inability to comprehend everything at once. Such a person must grow gradually in knowledge. English “grasp” and “comprehend” make the cognitive dimension of ergreiffen and fassen clear without removing the imagery of receiving something offered. Free gift and gradual understanding are complementary claims, not interchangeable stages of self-produced salvation.
