Meaning

The talent is the gift the anonymous author says God has entrusted to him. Pfund, literally a pound, participates in the image of a received resource that must not be buried. The almighty giver is described as the lord who grants it, while the author presents himself as an unworthy recipient rather than its independent owner. This obligation justifies publishing a limited but truthful account for sincere pupils misled by false practitioners. The English “talent” brings out the allusive entrusted-gift sense; it does not merely praise the author’s natural cleverness. The promise remains bounded by what he considers fitting to disclose.
