Meaning

Congealing and coagulating describe a coming together or becoming settled, but the words do not carry one uniform mechanism throughout the volume. Fixation adds an emphasis on remaining stable, especially under fire. The main treatise can coordinate or gloss these terms while still using them at different stages. A body that has become coherent is not therefore automatically the finished medicine.

The family includes Germanised learned verbs, their nouns and a plain description of quicksilver becoming stehend, or remaining fixed. These are selected access points, not proof that every occurrence means ordinary freezing or the same modern phase change. Each author specifies what is being joined, what stability means and who can accomplish it.

Use in the book

Part II: matter and the work · unit 14 places congealing within preliminary work: the extracted inward parts are reunited with their own salt into one thing. The resulting subject still requires further preparation and is explicitly called harmful poison if prematurely used as medicine. Later failure to coagulate properly is one of the signs of an improperly governed work. The corrective discussion pairs congelation and fixation as the desired completed condition, while the summary poem distinguishes preliminary coagulation from later coagulation and fixing.

Nature’s opening complaint rejects attempts to make ordinary volatile quicksilver fixed through the alchemist’s forceful laboratory activity. Her objection concerns his matter, method and ignorance of her craft, not merely a dislike of the word “congeal.” The Summary makes another distinction: artificial congealing does not give Mercury’s two seeds a lasting fixed body, whereas Nature’s subterranean congealing is said to yield a fixed grain capable of further nourishment. That author claims experience for the latter account; the claim is not independently established here.

The Way of Truth gives its own reinterpretation. Coagulation names moisture becoming so united with fire that it withstands heat rather than escaping as vapour. Conversely, ordinary treatment of perfect metals may dissolve and recoagulate them in their former form without achieving the sought separation. This last use makes clear that an operation’s familiar name is not evidence of philosophical success.

Translation

The English uses both “congeal” and “coagulate,” and the corrective passage renders congelation as “coagulation” alongside “fixation.” Readers should not infer a rigid English technical taxonomy absent from that local pairing. The Summary’s fix corpus and granum distinguish a fixed body from a fixed grain; those objects should not disappear under the general label “solidification.” The companion differences remain visible rather than being reconciled into a single process chart.
