Meaning

Confusion here names the matter’s initial mingled condition, explained by vermischetes wesen, rather than merely the practitioner’s bewilderment. It is partly heavenly and partly earthly and cannot initially be described by a wholly discernible colour. The author nevertheless insists that it must be rightly recognised before work begins. This juxtaposition makes recognition more demanding than matching an obvious visual specimen. The aligned English “a confusion or mingled being” preserves the explanatory pairing instead of presenting confusion as an accidental mistake. The warning concerns engagement with an insufficiently understood matter and its hidden spirit, not a permission to substitute any indiscriminate mixture.
