The prayer addresses God's mercy as grundlose: without a bottom or limit, hence “boundless” in the English. It does not mean mercy without a reason or foundation. The petition asks for right knowledge of eternal Wisdom and for her presence and assistance in the work. Mercy is thus the ground of requesting understanding, not an achieved quality of the practitioner. The surrounding prayer names God as Father of heavenly light and source of good gifts, situating the expression within dependence on divine generosity.
