Meaning

The Way of Truth narrator lists amalgamation, precipitation and repeated operations among his unsuccessful pursuits. These are not recommendations: his first-person account turns former effort into evidence against the sophistical path. Jteriren is rendered “repeating operations,” while amalgamiren and præcipitiren become “amalgamation” and “precipitation.” Later the compressed list Amalg. and Circul. places amalgamation alongside circulation in a catalogue of fruitless labour. The abbreviation is evidence for the name of an operation, not a complete explanation of how it was performed. Nor does the rejection establish that every process bearing one of these names has the same meaning in the Hydrolith or its other companions.
