Meaning

Solar symbolism uses the sun’s light, course, and generative influence to interpret religious figures and rites. Sabaism is used here as a name for sun-worship.

Use in the book

The east, the lodge officers, and circumambulation receive solar explanations. The Osiris drama is interpreted through loss and return of vitality, while the point within a circle leads toward generative symbolism. The book both draws on sun-worship and claims that Masonry preserves a purer symbolic meaning. These positions depend on a distinction between honoring a created sign and worshipping it as the ultimate object.

In this edition

Sabaism receives its local meaning from the passage. The entry does not use the word as a precise modern classification of every religion called Sabaean or Sabian.

Reading the argument

The author’s distinction helps explain the apparent tension between extensive solar interpretations and insistence on theism. It does not demonstrate that every named rite originally had the same meaning or that all ancient religion can be reduced to astronomy.
