Meaning

Lemma.

Mânes names the revered spirit or shades of the dead in classical language. Its plural form can refer to one person: Gamelin invokes Marat’s august shade as witness to an oath, then Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s shade for love of humanity and zeal to regenerate it. The noun gives political and philosophical allegiance the form of address to a revered departed presence. It neither names horses’ manes nor establishes a literal apparition.
