Meaning

The Secret Code is the concealed body of disciplinary rules invoked to enforce brotherhood and protect the order.

Use in the book

The introduction insists that brotherly conduct is an obligation with consequences. The regulations threaten expulsion and penalties for acts against the order or another brother’s honor. A disruptive member is to be admonished and, if unreformed, dealt with under the Secret Rules. The chief officer may formulate regulations but is not permitted to alter those secret provisions.

In this edition

Secret Code and Secret Rules remain the source’s expressions. The lexicon neither supplies concealed clauses nor treats dotted omissions as recoverable text.

Reading the argument

The book supplies the existence and asserted force of this code without disclosing a complete public text. A reader can describe that structure but cannot responsibly fill the gaps with imagined penalties or present-day procedures.
