Meaning

The new English uses chymical to preserve the historical association of alchemical philosophy, material preparation and medicine. The spelling is a translation convention, not a claim that seventeenth-century practice formed the same discipline as modern chemistry. It lets the reader hear the shared field of inquiry without making chymical an assurance of present-day scientific validity.

The convention does not erase local contrasts. The source distinguishes natural and chymical stones and names spagyric medicine in its own argument. Where the original errata direct Phisique to be replaced by Chimique, that is a specific printed correction, not permission to substitute chymical for every occurrence of physical or natural.

Places to read

  1. The Original Title Page · Unit 1Title announces collected treatises on true salt and universal spirit, tied to the Cosmopolite’s third principle and chymical medicine.
  2. Book One · Chapter 4 · Unit 5Nature’s universal stone generates all three kinds while chymical stone perfects like metals; sun/air/earth provide parent, bearer and nurse.
  3. Original Errata for the Treatises on Salt · Unit 1Eighteen printed instructions correct letters, agreement, punctuation and substantial readings, including seed, chymical, dews, Mercury and the winter-cooking negation. The page-3 seed correction has a doubtful target, the page-40 instruction remains unmatched, and the isolated iner and supplied [s] retain their editorial qualifications.
