Meaning

Recognition concerns acknowledging persons or bodies as legitimate brethren. Landmarks are principles or inherited features treated as foundational to Masonry.

Use in the book

The ethical account connects landmarks with belief, toleration, equity, and fraternity. The rules nevertheless exclude recognition of bodies in which G has no prominent place. The warrant provisions add a separate institutional condition of legitimacy. Clymer’s universal language therefore operates within stated doctrinal and administrative boundaries.

Reading the argument

The entry explains the criteria in this book. It does not decide the recognition of any current lodge, grand lodge, or rite. Nor should the source’s claim to universality conceal its explicit exclusions.
