Meaning

A seal can mark something with an impression; in these hymns that familiar action becomes an image of cosmic formation and just order. Both primary occurrences have the Ionic accusative σφρηγῖδα. The conventional lookup form σφραγίς gathers them without changing their printed spelling.

Use in the book

Apollo holds the seal of the entire cosmos at XXXIV.26. The accompanying τυπῶτιν makes its forming or stamping activity explicit. The line follows the comparison with Pan and the sounds of the winds, drawing the hymn's musical and cosmic images toward a power that gives a determinate stamp to the whole. Apollo is the holder of the seal; the grammar does not simply call him a seal.

The hymn to Nomos uses a different construction. At LXIV.2 Law itself is invoked as a just seal, beside its designation as setter of the stars. Here the seal image belongs directly to the addressee and joins cosmic arrangement to justice. The difference between holding a formative seal and being a just seal is more useful than treating the two passages as interchangeable proof of a single divine identity. Neither passage describes a worshipper applying a physical seal in a ceremony.

Translation

The apparatus reports σφραγῖδα τυπωτήν at XXXIV.26 and credits the adopted correction to Hermann. At LXIV.2 it likewise contrasts adopted σφρηγῖδα δικαίην with σφραγῖδα δικαίαν. The seal noun remains recognizable, but τυπῶτιν gives an active forming force where reported τυπωτήν presents the seal as fashioned or moulded. The other changes include dialectal spelling. The supplied 'stamping seal' usefully makes the force of τυπῶτιν explicit rather than locating that whole meaning in σφραγίς alone.
